Cooperating with the Baltic Sea States on Consumer Safety

Coffee makers, toys and other consumer products must be safe for the user! There is still a lot to be done!

(BSG)

Many products on the European markets do not meet the safety requirements of European standards. Tests found that almost 2 out of 3 show discrepancies from EU guidelines and EN-Standards. Approximately 5-10% of tested products showed defects which were so severe that a serious danger to the consumer could not be ruled out. The Baltic Sea Network-Product Safety consists of consumer protection agencies from the abutting Baltic Sea Countries, Hamburg and Schleswig Holstein that have joined forces to enhance consumer protection across national borders. Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Schleswig-Holstein are striving to achieve consistently high safety levels for all consumers in the Baltic Sea area. The Nordic Council of Ministers – the joint political body of Scandinavian countries and their autonomous territories – supports this cooperation.

The project is establishing a cooperation and information network for non-food products. Effective cooperation and quick information flows among the agencies are to prevent the import and re-import of unsafe products. Concrete steps are taken primarily in the area of electric household appliances, which constitute a pestering problem in all participating countries.

This does not only enhance consumer safety, but also helps to protect the closely integrated economies of the Baltic Sea area from distorted competition. Manufacturers who do not adhere to European safety standards are able to produce at lower costs. Not only does this place unsafe products on the markets of the Baltic Sea area; in addition the resultant distortions of competition affect all economic actors.
