Hamburg European Green Capital 2011

To access the official Hamburg European Green Capital website, please click here.The title, “European Green Capital”, is a new award developed by the European Commission. Following Stockholm in 2010, Hamburg will hold the title in 2011 as one of the first two cities to receive the award.
The recognition is a great honour for the city, which has a long history of striving toward ambitious environmental protection goals. Simultaneously, the EU Commission designed the title to encourage the exchange of best practices and increase the level of city-to-city competition.
„Hamburg, 2011 winner, has shown major achievements in the past years and at present, has also achieved excellent environmental standards across the board. The city has set very ambitious future plans, which promise additional improvements“.
That was the jury’s conclusion upon choosing Hamburg as European Green Capital 2011. The recognition is both an honour as well as a challenge to continue expanding a booming a trade and service industry, all the while acting as a trailblazer in climate and environment.
The competition was two-phased, in which an independent jury evaluated Hamburg as compared to competitors such as Copenhagen, Vienna, Oslo, Munster and Freiburg.

Hamburg received the highest marks in three categories. In comparison to the cities depicted above, Hamburg exemplifies overall high achievement in environmental protection across the board. Hamburg received high scores in all twelve categories including climate protection, mobility, air quality, waste water and land management. Simultaneously, Hamburg shows room for improvement in almost all categories.
European Green Capital Plans and Projects
As European Green Capital, Hamburg intends to create a Europe-wide platform for the exchange of ideas between experts and citizens, taking on the big environmental questions of our time. In this sense, 2011 should be a year full of creativity and new ideas.
Infopavilion
An infopavilion located downtown will be the central meeting point for all 2011 activities. Both visitors and citizens alike may receive an overview of the city’s goals, plans and visions for European Green Capital 2011. The infopavilion will host a permanent exhibition aiming to educate visitors on Hamburg’s environmental endeavors for the years to come. Varying special exhibitions comprised of a range of thematic topics of interest will complement the program.
Environmental Tours – Experience the Environment Locally
In 2011, citizens and visitors of the Hanseatic City of Hamburg can experience Hamburg’s best environmental practices first hand both around Hamburg’s outer region as well as in the metropolitan area. Whether walking, cycling or the use of public transportation, people may explore the broad range of outstanding environmental projects Hamburg has to offer and witness Hamburg’s environmental challenges first hand.
Train of Ideas
If you are not able to come to Hamburg, Hamburg might come to you! During 2011, in an effort to communicate Hamburg’s ideas throughout Europe, the city will become a Green Capital on wheels. This will take place in the form of a train, containing a modern and interactive exhibition of ideas, which will travel throughout Europe, disseminating experiences and best practices in new ways. Events
Hamburg is preparing a wide range of eco-events and activities from now until the end of 2011. Among them will be an Environmental Youth Summit as well as an International Environmental Law Conference, with participants from all parts of the globe. In addition, workshops focusing on an array of themes such as land use, mobility and future environmental protection will be discussed. Further, a helpful guide will be published concerning the design of environmentally friendly events.
