An economically prosperous and politically strong European Union makes an essential contribution towards stability, security and prosperity on the European continent. Due to its geographic location, hanseatic tradition and subsequent interests, Hamburg greatly benefits from the European Union and the process of European integration.
Due to its prominent position in global trade and its international economy, Hamburg is located at the very heart of the European single market. In the wake of recent rounds of EU enlargement, Hamburg was able to renew its cultural and economic ties with the Baltic Sea region. Hamburg’s European politics shall strengthen these positive developments. At the same time, Europe faces huge challenges: Issues such as the preservation of economic prosperity and employment in times of a global financial and economic hardship, effective measures to combat climate change, the promotion of sustainable energy and effective measures against international crime and terrorism can only succeed within a common European framework. Hamburg believes that only within a strong Europe, it can effectively and successfully address these challenges and benefit from new chances.
