Hamburg State Archive - the city's memory

The Hamburg State Archive is the city's memory. All documents that originated in Hamburg's authorities and are no longer needed there for daily work are examined by archivists for their historical value and, if necessary, permanently preserved.

Thus, the State Archive has documents from the Middle Ages to the recent past, which they store professionally and make accessible to the public in accordance with legal regulations.

These archival records can be valuable not only for scientific research projects related to Hamburg, but also for family research or to clarify legal issues. You can do initial research on your topic by yourself in the online database (scopeArchiv - Informationen zur Suche (hamburg.de)) before you send an enquiry to the archive or visit the reading room.

You will find a wealth of information (unfortunately only in German) on the website: www.hamburg.de/staatsarchiv

Please also note the information page in English:
