Hamburg and India have long lasting ties. They date back as far as the 16th century. India first aroused Hamburg’s interest in the context of maritime trade. The Hamburg-Calcutta-Line, for instance, was founded in 1888 and later taken over by the German HAPAG-shipping company. However, only few people know that Hamburg was the very first place where the Indian National Anthem “Jana Gana Mana” has ever been played. In September 1942, at a time when India was still a British crown colony, the anthem resounded in Hamburg’s famous Hotel Atlantic on the occasion of the foundation of the Indo-German Society.
Today more than ever, Indo-German relations remain dynamic and show great potential. Hamburg is fully aware of this potential and seeks to strengthen and advance existing as well as create new bonds and cooperation in areas such as trade and economy, science, research, society and culture.
