What is housing benefit?

Housing benefit is a state subsidy to relieve the burden on low-income households whose housing and heating costs consume a large proportion of their income. Housing benefit is paid as a rent subsidy for rented accommodation and as an encumbrance allowance for owner-occupied accommodation.
