Biomass Partnership Hamburg-Namibia

In Namibia, bush encroachment of savannas has become a major ecological problem. Large parts of the grass savanna are encroached by primarily endemic bush species, such as black thorn, with serious consequences for animals, plants and pasture farming. Experts agree that international demand and utilisation of extracted bush can help solve this environmental problem. For this reason, the Ministry of Environment, Climate, Energy and Agriculture and Wärme Hamburg GmbH together with the scientific community, examine the efficient utilisation of Namibian bush biomass in Hamburg. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed in May 2020.

Current announcement:

The review of the cooperation was suspended indefinitely at the end of May 2021, as it became clear that, on the one hand, Wärme Hamburg GmbH is currently and in the next 2-3 years technically unable to burn larger quantities of bush biomass and, on the other hand, some of the questions raised from the socio-economic sector can only be answered with the support of federal ministries. With the press release of the BUKEA of 18 May 2021, the public was informed about this.

series of events on the topic of "Use of bush biomass from Namibia" was organized and carried out in November / December 2020 by Hamburg-Global. You can find detailed information (slides, lectures, discussions) on the Hamburg-Global website.

This website regularly informs about the evaluation process of a possible future biomass partnership between Hamburg and Namibia. The project is currently in an open-ended review phase. Thus, the factual contents and statements reproduced here constitute an interim state of information, which is based in many parts on the research of the Institute for Applied Material Flow Management (IfaS), University of Trier and the on-site experiences of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit  (GIZ) GmbH. The statements are neither conclusive nor represent a general opinion of those involved in the project, also not of the Ministry of Environment, Climate, Energy and Agriculture (BUKEA) as the publisher of this website.
