In times of increasing geopolitical crises, the HSC promotes multilateral exchange in a closed space. It encourages open dialogue and aims to strengthen trust in international partnerships. The discussions focus on designing political frameworks for joint action. The HSC differs from other conference formats in that an upstream co-creation phase is used to develop explicit breakthroughs for achieving the SDGs by 2030. The HSC also strengthens the role of commercial enterprises in new sustainability alliances.
The Sustainability Unit, together with the Senate Chancellery, is one of the four initiators of the HSC and is involved in the organization and content design of the conference. The FHH is responsible for managing the “Future Cities” theme hub.
