The two northern sections of Neuer Wall and Grosse Bleichen are adjacent to the Jungfernstieg boulevard, one of the best-known promenades in the heart of the city, which is characterized by pedestrian traffic and is well-known throughout the metropolitan region. Both street sections, together with the Jungfernstieg, are among the central projects in the coalition agreement in the 22nd legislative period of the Hamburg Parliament and in the action plan "An attractive city center for all".
Especially at weekends and during the various major events during the summer months, these sections of the street up to Poststrasse are very popular with pedestrians.
At the same time as the final conversion and upgrading of Jungfernstieg, traffic-calming measures were carried out in the adjacent section of Neuer Wall at the beginning of 2025. The aim of the conversion was to sustainably improve the quality of public space and traffic safety in this area, which is heavily influenced by pedestrian traffic.
Funding for the project was obtained from the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV) via the "Pedestrian Traffic Funding Initiative". The funding rate was 75%. Accordingly, the BMDV assisted with a share of 487,400 euros of the total costs of almost 650,000 euros.
The aim of the project was to expand the space for pedestrian movement and encounters, including the actual roadway. Delivery traffic must also be taken into account in the new traffic routing due to the numerous retail outlets. The solution lies in the multiple use of the available roadway space and the implementation of loading zones.
In order to create a visual boundary to the southern road sections, the asphalt surface was replaced by paving. A retractable bollard system at the junction with Poststrasse will ensure safety for pedestrians during the day. Once installed, the retractable bollard system will be managed by Hamburger Verkehrsanlagen (HHVA / “Hamburg Infrastructure Systems”) to ensure trouble-free operation. Delivery traffic is allowed to enter between 9 pm and 11 am. The bollards remain lowered during this time.
Finally, as part of the planning, preparations are being made to adjust the curve radii at the Große Bleichen / Poststraße junction so that delivery and tradesmen's vehicles do not drive over the sidewalks.
The traffic-calming measures and the installation of bollards on Grosse Bleichen can only take place once the structural engineering work on Hamburger Hof has been completed.
