"My Tree – My City" Campaign

Hamburg, the European Green Capital 2011, started a tree planting campaign in June 2011 to close the gaps in the tree population along the roadsides of Hamburg together with Hamburg citizens. In the European Green Capital year the city of Hamburg has planted 2011 trees. The citizens of Hamburg joined the efforts of the city of Hamburg to make the city greener. With their donations they contributed to close all the gaps that have emerged in the tree population along the roadsides in recent years.

Overwhelming Support

The major tree planting campaign started in June 2011. And what nobody expected to happen so quickly: a few months after the start of the campaign the sum of donor funds reached 250.000 Euro. By the end of the campaign the campaign reached a sum of 295.433,81 € in donations resulting in the planting of further 600 trees and demonstrating overwhelming support of Hamburg citizens to its city.

The Hamburg Senate committed to the planting of 2011 additional trees, which were planted in districts where donations were low.

How did it work?

Hamburg citizens were able to identify the location of their choice in an online map and donate for the tree of their choice. The City of Hamburg gave for each tree that reached donations of 500 Euro, the same amount on top to cover the average planting costs of 1.000 Euro per tree, including the preparation of planting pit, the planting itself and the subsequent care. The city was also setting a good example and paid for another 2011 new trees in the year of the Green Capital.
